ROAD TO RENEWAL: Day 1: Social Justice and Holistic Ministry

Road to Renewal, Day 1: Social Justice and Holistic Ministry In times like these—racially polarizing, economically challenging, politically corrupt, generationally estranged, spiritually conflicted—it is essential that Christ’s Church advocates for social justice and holistic ministry. Social justice involves making individuals and communities whole by doing two things: 1) Upholding goodness and impartiality, and 2) seeking avenues to better meet the needs of the total person—physical, psychological, social, economic, as well as spiritual. Social justice and holistic ministry stand at the center of Jesus’ ministry thrust.  It flows from our willingness to abandon the dead-end agenda of personal priority and privilege, and embrace Jesus’ character, which was typified by selfless service, rooted in unlimited, unrestricted love.  This is what Jesus meant when He said, “I have come that you might have life, and have it to the full.” The most injurious injustice over which we must prevail is self-righteousness —the belief...

ROAD TO RENEWAL: Day 2: Evangelism

Road to Renewal, Day 2: Evangelism Baptists are supposed to be evangelical Christians.  We see it as part of our Christian mandate to share our faith with others in the hope that they will embrace Jesus as their Savior and Lord.  But except for a few Churches and a few traditional outreach attempts, we fall woefully short on our evangelism mandate. Evangelism directed toward African Americans is a complex and challenging proposition in the 21st Century Church, for several reasons: For the first time in our history, the traditional African American Church is tasked with reaching out to five generations—from Baby Boomers to Generation Z—each with its own unique way of receiving information, perceptions of organizational structure, and expectations from its Church organizations. Though relatively small by comparison, there is a consistent group of about 15% of African American Church attendees that are attracted to multi-ethnic Churches or Churches that...

ROAD TO RENEWAL: Day 3: Our Commitment to Christian Education

Road to Renewal, Day 3: Our Commitment to Christian Education The traditional vehicles of Christian Education in our African American Baptist Churches, like just about everything else in our Churches, have undergone considerable shifts over the past half-century.  Sunday School is still the staple in most of our Churches and enjoys the greatest amount of consistent attendance.  But more often than not, pre-set curriculums are ill-fitted to meet the specific needs of a local congregation.  It’s the difference between buying clothes off the rack and having an outfit that is tailored to your specific measurements.  Both provide coverage, but one does so with far greater effectiveness. Other education formats struggle mightily.  Mid-Week Bible Study seems to be the province of the retired on one end of the spectrum, and children on the other.  Youth and young adults tend to stay away, preferring the inspiration of worship over the intensity of...

Resurrection Sunday Service

https://vimeo.com/529970827 Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons!—II Corinthians 5:17 (MSG) Lord, we thank You for the meaning, power and promise of this day. Thank You that the empty tomb of our Savior gives us a new outlook, new purpose and new future. As we go today, let us rejoice in the reality of the empty tomb. In the name of our Savior, we pray. AMEN!
