SUNDAY

Pharaoh’s daughter came down to the Nile to bathe…She saw the basket-boat floating in the reeds and sent her maid to get it. She opened it and saw the child—a baby crying! Her heart went out to him. She said, “This must be one of the Hebrew babies.” Then his sister was before her: “Do you want me to go and get a nursing mother from the Hebrews so she can nurse the baby for you?” Pharaoh’s daughter said, “Yes. Go.” The girl went and called the child’s mother.—Exodus 2:6-8 (MSG)

Scripture reminds us that God often does the most divine work through mothers who stand firm in difficult times. Jochebed, the mother of Moses, lived under a decree designed to destroy her child’s future. Yet in the face of danger, she demonstrated courage, creativity, and deep faith.
Jochebed had a strategy for her child’s survival. She didn’t simply give birth—she prepared. She hid Moses, crafted an ark, positioned it carefully, and placed Miriam nearby to watch. Her actions were intentional. She understood the world her child was entering, and she planned accordingly.
Today’s mothers face their own Pharaohs—systems, pressures, and challenges that threaten the well being of their children. Black mothers, in particular, have long navigated unique financial, social, and educational obstacles. Yet generation after generation, they have survived by planning, praying, and trusting God. Our children need more than love—they need mothers with a plan shaped by wisdom and faith.
Jochebed knew the power of tender, loving care. Pharaoh’s daughter could offer Moses luxury, but she couldn’t offer the warmth of a mother’s embrace. Children need affection, presence, and nurture. No amount of clothing, technology, or entertainment can replace the healing power of a mother’s love. Many emotional wounds in adulthood trace back to a lack of tenderness in childhood. Jochebed shows us that love is not optional—it is essential.
Jochebed kept Moses connected to his spiritual heritage. Though he grew up in an Egyptian palace, he never forgot he was Hebrew. He never forgot the God of his ancestors. And because he knew who God was, he knew who he was. Mothers today must do the same—teach children the stories, songs, and faith that anchor them in Christ. Our heritage is not merely cultural; it is spiritual. And at the center of our heritage is Jesus—Grandma’s Jesus, Big Mama’s Jesus, the Jesus who carried our people through every valley.

PRAYER: Lord, we thank You for mothers who love, protect, and guide their children through difficult times. Bless every mother with wisdom, tenderness, and unshakable faith. Help them anchor their homes in Jesus, our Heritage and our Hope. In His name, we pray. AMEN!
