ABOUT

Rev. Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. once said “Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” In this spirit, this MLK Holiday BR 2023, we are “Walking in Legacy” and celebrating the past, present, and future of African American progress, right here in the capital city.

Office of Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome and The City of Baton Rouge are proud to partner with various organizations and corporations to expand this time of celebration and service that will serve as a launch pad for year round community conversation, engagement, and service. Mayor-President Broome’s vision “is to create a celebration for the entire city with the goal of commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through establishing and reinforcing the work being done by government agencies, community non-profit organizations, and private citizens to promote peace and non-violence locally and around the world.”

MLK Holiday BR 2023 will not only bring together diverse people to inspire and be inspired through service, but to advance our community through three key themes: literacy, youth empowerment, and equity and justice as well. We are celebrating those doing the work to improve Baton Rouge, and set the foundation for more to come.
