We are Shiloh Celebrating Our 148th Church Anniversary
We Are Shiloh…
- Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1872 as an evangelistic endeavor of Virginia Missionaries, and has enjoyed 148 years as a harmonious congregation of Jesus Christ without a split.
- Shiloh has had only five Pastors in its 148-year history—George Byrd, Jack Mitchell, Dudley Turnbull Smith, Charles Turnbull Smith, and our current Pastor.
- Shiloh’s main campus has five buildings—the old sanctuary (1930), the current sanctuary (1972), the education building (1980), the fellowship hall (1996) and the nursery (2011)—and three areas of paved parking that can accommodate over 200 vehicles.
- Shiloh also has two buildings removed from the main campus—one which houses our Bargain Center and one which is scheduled to be converted into five apartments—and land which is currently under development for a community garden and playground.
- Shiloh operates an Early Learning Center that is licensed to accommodate more than 400 children.
- Shiloh has a Charitable Foundation that handles the Church’s benevolences and other community outreach endeavors, including our Scholarship Ministry, Summer Youth Enrichment Program, Social Services, and a Social Justice Ministry.
- Shiloh employs, full and/or part time, over 60 people, to help carry out its various ministries and activities, and is one of the largest minority employers in the Greater Baton Rouge area.
- Shiloh’s Brotherhood and Sisterhood Ministries regularly feed the homeless.
- Shiloh’s Prison Ministry regularly holds worship experiences with the incarcerated.
- Shiloh’s Comfort and Care Ministry holds monthly worship with the residents of two local nursing homes. During the Pandemic, the Comfort and Care Ministry conducts Mobile Waves at the homes of our seniors to express our love and concern for them.
- Shiloh’s Ministry of Community Outreach holds Prayer-by-Phone three times each week, Prayer Meeting each Sunday, at 7:30 a.m., and Praise and Prayer each Wednesday, at 6:00 p.m.
- Shiloh’s Scholarship Ministry annually extends beyond the membership to include three individuals in the Baton Rouge community and several individuals in Africa.
- Shiloh’s Christian Education Ministry includes two Mid-week Bible Studies at the Church, a quarterly discipleship study, and a Summer Camp, in addition to weekly Sunday School and an annual Vacation Bible School.
- Shiloh’s Music Ministry includes seven choirs—Sanctuary, Inspirational, Male, Young Adult (YAM), Children and Youth, Chorale and Jubilee—and two Praise Teams, and Shiloh’s Usher Ministry includes three ministries.
- Shiloh livestreams its two Sunday worship experiences and Mid-week Bible Studies weekly.
- Shiloh has two weekly television broadcasts—“A Time of Harvest” and “A Closer Look” (CW21)—and a weekly radio broadcast (WXOK, AM 1460).
- Shiloh has a podcast—the “THRIVE Podcast with the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.” The podcast features conversations with interesting people making an impact in our community, as well as highlights of our worship experiences and Bible Studies.
- Shiloh holds membership with the Fourth District Missionary Baptist Association, the Louisiana Baptist State Convention, the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., the American Baptist Churches of the South, the Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge, Together Baton Rouge and Together Louisiana.
- Shiloh’s commitment to holistic ministry—serving the total individual (physical, mental, emotional, economic, social, academic and spiritual)—is the hallmark of our mission and keeps us constantly striving to do more for the kingdom, until Christ returns.
