SUMMARY:DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING HOLIDAY EVENTS
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO VIEW EVENTS PAGE: Attend a Community Event (mlkholidaybr.com)\nRev. Dr.Martin Luther King\, Jr. once said “Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice\, suffering\, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” In this spirit\, this MLK Holiday BR 2022\, we are “Walking in Legacy” and celebrating the past\, present\, and future of African American progress\, right here in the capital city.\n‍\nOffice of Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome and The City of Baton Rouge are proud to partner with various organizations and corporations to expand this time of celebration and service that will serve as a launch pad for year round community conversation\, engagement\, and service. Mayor-President Broome’s vision “is to create a celebration for the entire city with the goal of commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. through establishing and reinforcing the work being done by government agencies\, community non-profit organizations\, and private citizens to promote peace and non-violence locally and around the world.” \n‍\nMLK Holiday BR 2022 will not only bring together diverse people to inspire and be inspired through service\, but to advance our community through three key themes: literacy\, youth empowerment\, and equity and justice as well. We are celebrating those doing the work to improve Baton Rouge\, and set the foundation for more to come.

SUMMARY:ROAD TO RENEWAL: Day 3: Our Commitment to Christian Education
DESCRIPTION:Road to Renewal\, Day 3: Our Commitment to Christian Education \nThe traditional vehicles of Christian Education in our African American Baptist Churches\, like just about everything else in our Churches\, have undergone considerable shifts over the past half-century.  Sunday School is still the staple in most of our Churches and enjoys the greatest amount of consistent attendance.  But more often than not\, pre-set curriculums are ill-fitted to meet the specific needs of a local congregation.  It’s the difference between buying clothes off the rack and having an outfit that is tailored to your specific measurements.  Both provide coverage\, but one does so with far greater effectiveness. \nOther education formats struggle mightily.  Mid-Week Bible Study seems to be the province of the retired on one end of the spectrum\, and children on the other.  Youth and young adults tend to stay away\, preferring the inspiration of worship over the intensity of scripture applicability to their current life experiences. \nTraining in denominational beliefs and distinctions\, once as common as Sunday School\, is all but extinct.  Very few of our Churches provide it\, and those that do find little support\, as people discount the value of Church doctrine.  With the proliferation of religious programming to be found on television and in social media\, it has played a significant role in making denominational distinctions seem unnecessary and irrelevant\, and the argument could be made that it has done more harm than good. \nAs a result\, there are things that we don’t know that have an impact on the quality of our faith-walk.  We don’t know the difference between an ordinance and a sacrament; we don’t know what to believe about the Lord’s Supper and water baptism; we don’t know what eternal security means or whether we have it or whether we can lose it; we don’t know the difference between dispensationalism and progressive revelation; we don’t know what to make of the Trinity; we don’t know how to respond to death and dying. \nIs God punitive or corrective?  What is the purpose of prayer?  How do we distinguish praise from worship?  What is the relationship between the Church scattered and the Church gathered?  What is the Church’s responsibility toward addressing suffering and poverty and prejudice and marginalization?  What is the canon and how was it formed?  What is hermeneutics\, and why is it important?  What’s the difference between a Biblical translation and a paraphrase?  What is inspiration and what form did it take in the development of scripture? \nIn the Gospel accounts\, the disciples repeatedly ask Jesus to\, “Teach us…” and “Show us…”. This is the essence of Christian Education—teaching and showing\, so that we might be about the business of doing the Gospel.  We can’t teach or show what we don’t know\, what we have not been exposed to.  Thus\, an essential element of our spiritual renewal is in our commitment to consistent Christian education.

SUMMARY:ROAD TO RENEWAL: Day 2: Evangelism
DESCRIPTION:Road to Renewal\, Day 2: Evangelism \nBaptists are supposed to be evangelical Christians.  We see it as part of our Christian mandate to share our faith with others in the hope that they will embrace Jesus as their Savior and Lord.  But except for a few Churches and a few traditional outreach attempts\, we fall woefully short on our evangelism mandate. \nEvangelism directed toward African Americans is a complex and challenging proposition in the 21st Century Church\, for several reasons: \n\nFor the first time in our history\, the traditional African American Church is tasked with reaching out to five generations—from Baby Boomers to Generation Z—each with its own unique way of receiving information\, perceptions of organizational structure\, and expectations from its Church organizations.\nThough relatively small by comparison\, there is a consistent group of about 15% of African American Church attendees that are attracted to multi-ethnic Churches or Churches that are led by white Pastors. For these people\, the traditional Church often is seen as\, “too limited” in its Gospel presentation and Church programming.\nThough it is at a much slower rate by comparison to other ethnic groups\, there is a clear pattern of secularization within the African American community. More black people feel that there is no need for the Church or organized religion in their lives.  They prefer to call themselves\, “spiritual\,” and do not identify with being\, “religious.”\nThere is practically no interest in denominational distinctions within our Churches. In response\, many traditional African American Churches are opting to drop their denominational affiliation from their name or their Gospel presentation.\nThe explosion of television and social media ministries have caused many younger African American seekers to question the need to come to a traditional House of Worship\, when they can worship privately from their home\, their office of anywhere of their choosing.\n\nMindful of these challenges\, there are some truths that we cannot overlook: \n\nThere is less likelihood of winning a soul for Christ after the person has reached the age of 15. In other words\, we need to reach people with the Gospel as early and as often as possible.\nWhen Jesus came out of the wilderness and initiated His ministry\, He came doing three things—Preaching\, Teaching and Healing. This is the foundation of our evangelism thrust.\nThe message of the Gospel is still the only hope that we have for kingdom citizenship in this life and for eternal life with God\, in heaven.\nThere is still only one Name\, under heaven\, given among men\, whereby we must be saved\, and that is the name of Jesus.\n\nThus\, on our Road to Renewal\, it is vital that we keep before us the importance of Evangelism\, and that we regularly review and modify our efforts to meet the changing needs of those we seek to serve.

SUMMARY:ROAD TO RENEWAL: Day 1: Social Justice and Holistic Ministry
DESCRIPTION:Road to Renewal\, Day 1: Social Justice and Holistic Ministry \nIn times like these—racially polarizing\, economically challenging\, politically corrupt\, generationally estranged\, spiritually conflicted—it is essential that Christ’s Church advocates for social justice and holistic ministry. \nSocial justice involves making individuals and communities whole by doing two things: 1) Upholding goodness and impartiality\, and 2) seeking avenues to better meet the needs of the total person—physical\, psychological\, social\, economic\, as well as spiritual. \nSocial justice and holistic ministry stand at the center of Jesus’ ministry thrust.  It flows from our willingness to abandon the dead-end agenda of personal priority and privilege\, and embrace Jesus’ character\, which was typified by selfless service\, rooted in unlimited\, unrestricted love.  This is what Jesus meant when He said\, “I have come that you might have life\, and have it to the full.” \nThe most injurious injustice over which we must prevail is self-righteousness —the belief that we do not need Jesus\, but that we are just\, good and right apart from Him.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  It is only as we cling to Jesus that we can participate in His work of restoring lives. To be salt and light\, our practice of Jesus’ social justice and holistic ministry agenda must radiate out to all—but only after He first saturates us. \nOurs is a corrupt society\, and we have an obligation to speak and act against that corruption.  In Christ\, we can influence public policy and legislation. But we can accomplish nothing if we are afraid or unwilling to stand up.  Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. said that\, “A man can’t ride your back\, unless it is bent.”  It’s time that Christ’s Church straighten its back\, find its voice and speak.  We should affirm in our living how the justice of God’s kingdom influences our involvement in civic matters.  Jesus ministered to the poor and marginalized\, even challenging societal structures that weighed down upon them. Today\, we can do no less.

SUMMARY:Louisiana Center for Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:Join Louisiana Center for Health Equity and our partners virtually on January 13\, 2021 at 6:00 PM\, for “Louisiana’s Quest for Equitable Healthcare Continues” as we celebrate Medicaid expansion’s 5th year anniversary and Louisiana’s progress\, and discuss our journey forward. All are welcome and we encourage you to share your story.\n\nThe Louisiana Center for Health Equity has been on a decade-long quest to improve access to equitable healthcare for all communities across the state. LCHE’s work continues on that path.\n \nThis gathering is for everyone\, including the media\, community members\, community leaders\, and healthcare providers\, professionals and so on.\n \nWe will explore: Does healthcare coverage equal quality healthcare? How has COVID 19 impacted Black communities?\, Is Ochsner Health’s alleged disparate treatment of Black patients being addressed? And much more! This will be a platform for some to share their stories.\n\nThe public is invited. Please join us for this FREE virtual gathering by registering with the link below:\nhttps://laquestforequitablehealthcare.eventbrite.com/ \n \nThank you!
